Romney and religion | Power Line

Romney and religion | Power Line: "Now an elderly couple is recounting what Mitt Romney did to help bring joy and comfort to their young son decades ago when the boy was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Next, a woman describes how Mitt Romney helped her family after it moved to Massachusetts. He did so in big ways and small. For example, he helped take care of her son at times after the family’s daughter was born with severe health problems and the family had to attend to them.

Not a dry eye in my living room.

I have recounted several stories of this nature on Power Line, but had not read about the two offered tonight. Apparently, there is a nearly endless supply.

As I asked the other day, does Obama have any such stories? Has he ever helped people in need, other than by pushing for controversial political action items?"

One minute, Latino Nose Spectacles was in complete agreement with Senior in Blazer. The next, they were at each other’s throats, and Young Yellow Dress had to team with Hair Gel to step in as the voice of reason. Thoughts About the Selection of Paul Ryan

Couldn't be happier with the Paul Ryan pick. He seems to be one of the only people who is serious about cutting the size of government.

I think his viability as congressman shows that both democrats and Republicans want to cut the size of government. His district went to Obama by 4%, yet he consistently wins reelection by more than 60%.

It also shows Romney is serious about tackling entitlements. I've always been concerned that once elected, Romney may get very squishy when it comes to tackling hard issues. I don't think he would select Ryan if he was not serious about tackling entitlements.

http://mobile.bloomberg.com/news/2012-08-11/this-is-now-the-most-important-election-since-1980.html

The Democratic attack on Ryan and his budget plan is, at best, ignorant. “Budget-busting” tax cuts? The Ryan budget plan envisions taxes running at a higher level of GDP than the average of the last few decades. It brings the budget to long- term balance -- something that Obama has never proposed. (As his Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner admitted to Ryan in February: “We’re not coming before you to say we have a definitive solution to our long-term problem. What we do know is we don’t like yours.”)

Me: something beats nothin'.

One last comment that probably won't be very helpful, but I want to get it off my chest: When I see the hard work and positive attitude of the typical immigrant, I find it very hard to sympathize with the problems of the American working class. The so-called American poor are born with so many advantages, but they squander them through their own bad attitude and irresponsible behavior. Yes, in a welfare state the problems of my country's working class are my problem. But that makes me want to *attack* the welfare state, not expand it to help undeserving Americans even more. The people we should be worrying about are immigrants and would-be immigrants who can't even legally accept a job offer, not Americans who can't bother showing up to work on time.

Ted Cruz on the Tea Party

The Corner - National Review Online: "Cruz, who has been endorsed by National Review, told Wallace that his victory is a sign that the Tea Party still has momentum.  He explained,

This is part of a tidal wave that began in 2010 and that tidal wave is only stronger in 2012.  Those protests died down. I think the reason is the Tea Party went to work…  [V]oters are tired of career politicians in both parties, I mean, our country is at a crisis point right now… The American people are looking for new leaders who will step up and stop spending money we don’t have.” "

'via Blog this'

Can I just say that I find no fault in the Tea Party? To the contrary, I find that the tea party represents the best of American politics.

The Tea Party stands for basically two things: fiscal responsibility and constitutional government. And really those are one thing--because the constitution, as conceived, was supposed to enact a limited government.

Some people might criticize the tea party for being too strident, but I think these criticisms are completely misplaced. Sure, they should get the best result they can obtain with their limited power. I want them to be relevant. But compromise is overrated. How do you compromise when you think the government is moving in the wrong direction? You allow it to move in the wrong direction, but more slowly? Better I think to remain ideologically pure and find more converts than to compromise your principles and dilute the message.

Benchslap of the Day: Justice Scalia Pulls Rank on Judge Posner « Above the Law: A Legal Web Site – News, Commentary, and Opinions on Law Firms, Lawyers, Law School, Law Suits, Judges and Courts: "Judge Posner’s ideological drift; as he recently told NPR, he has grown less conservative “since the Republican Party started becoming goofy"

I read this before. And as the person who quoted it before mentioned, it makes no sense. Why would a judge evaluate ideas based on anything other than their merits?

Is Posner saying that he bases his political ideological preferences on the coolness of the members of the party most associated with the particular ideology?

Supreme Court Year in Review: Justice Scalia offers no evidence to back up his claims about illegal immigration. - Slate Magazine

Supreme Court Year in Review: Justice Scalia offers no evidence to back up his claims about illegal immigration. - Slate Magazine: "In his peroration, Justice Scalia says that "Arizona bears the brunt of the country's illegal immigration problem. Its citizens feel themselves under siege by large numbers of illegal immigrant who invade their property, strain their social services, and even place their lives in jeopardy." Arizona bears the brunt? Arizona is only one of the states that border Mexico, and if it succeeds in excluding illegal immigrants, these other states will bear the brunt, so it is unclear what the net gain to society would have been from Arizona's efforts, now partially invalidated by the Supreme Court. But the suggestion that illegal immigrants in Arizona are invading Americans' property, straining their social services, and even placing their lives in jeopardy is sufficiently inflammatory to call for a citation to some reputable source of such hyperbole. Justice Scalia cites nothing to support it."

This whole article seems to be based on a misreading of Scalia's opinion. He's not saying this is all necessarily true; only that Arizonans believe it to be true, and they should be able to supplement federal enforcement efforts.

Why ‘You Didn’t Build That’ Resonates - Bloomberg

Why ‘You Didn’t Build That’ Resonates - Bloomberg: "Frum mostly talks about why this statement irks rich people, but I believe it resonates badly with people at all income levels. Lots of people -- most, I hope -- are proud of something they’ve achieved in their lives and feel like that achievement owes much to their own hard work and talents. You don’t have to make over $250,000 a year to be annoyed when the president mocks people for taking credit for their achievements."
