I wonder if there is an economic theory to explain this behavior. Money is used to facilitate exchanges among many people. It's going to be hard for this guy to find a person who wants his amp more than the other amps on his list and has that amp to trade. Why is he limiting himself to trades?

One theory: he doesn't really want to get rid of it, but someone is making him. But then would that someone also want him to get a new amp immediately? probably not.
Maybe he doesn't want to know dollars and cents wise what his amp is worth? Maybe it has too much sentimental value to him to reduce it to numbers? But people do that with their houses all the time.
